Kraft Paper Pouches

Kraft paper pouches are unbleached paper laminated to a functional inner layer, because kraft carries no barrier of its own. We build them as stand up pouches, flat bottom bags and side gusset bags with zippers, one-way degassing valves and die-cut windows. It is the face brands choose when the pack should read as unprocessed, and it runs across coffee, confectionery, dried fruit and tea. The liner is chosen for the shelf life underneath, so the appearance costs nothing in protection.

About kraft paper packaging

Paper in the Hand, Packaging on the Shelf

A kraft paper pouch is bought for how it feels more than how it looks. Dried fruit, granola, loose leaf tea, speciality flour, bath salts — categories where a glossy plastic face argues with what the brand is saying. The paper is the outer web; a functional layer behind it does the protecting.

The Paper Carries No Barrier at All

This is the single most useful thing to know about kraft packaging. Paper on its own passes moisture, oxygen and grease. Everything protective in a kraft pouch is the laminate behind it — PE for moisture, an aluminium layer where oxygen and light matter, or a PLA layer where the whole pack is certified compostable. A supplier quoting a long shelf life on a kraft pouch is quoting the liner without mentioning it.

Designing for a Brown Substrate

  • Colours print over brown, not onto white. A solid white base coat restores accuracy, at the cost of some of the paper look.
  • Fine reversed-out type fills in. Keep it above roughly 7 pt and avoid hairline serifs.
  • Kraft scuffs in transit more than film — matt lamination or a varnish is worth specifying on long freight routes.
  • A die-cut window shows the product and gives the eye relief from an all-brown face.

Which Kraft, and in Which Format

Natural kraft, white kraft and recycled kraft all run here, laminated to PE, to foil, or to a compostable layer. Formats include the paper pouch range, kraft side gusset coffee bags, kraft flat bottom bags and kraft stand up pouches with zippers and windows. Where the whole pack has to break down, see compostable packaging — a kraft face over a PE liner does not compost.

Frequently asked

Specifying Kraft Paper Pouches: The Questions That Decide It

Does the paper itself protect the product?

No. Paper passes moisture, oxygen and grease. Every protective property in a kraft pouch comes from the layer laminated behind it, which is why any shelf life quoted is really a statement about the liner.

Can a kraft pouch be recycled with paper?

Not once it is laminated to a plastic liner — the fibres cannot be separated in a paper mill. A paper-look pack and a paper-stream pack are different things and it is worth being clear which you are buying.

Why does my brand colour look different on kraft?

Because it is printing over brown rather than onto white. A solid white base coat restores accuracy where you need it, at the cost of some of the paper look. We will show both on a draw-down.

Can you print white on kraft?

Yes, as an opaque base under other colours or as a design element on its own. On kraft it is the single most useful ink you can specify.

Is recycled kraft available?

Yes, and so is white kraft. Recycled kraft is darker and more variable in shade, which is honest for the positioning but harder to colour-match between runs.

Will kraft survive a long sea freight?

The laminate will. The surface is what suffers: kraft scuffs more than film, so on long routes we specify a matt lamination or a varnish and pack to avoid pallet rub.

Can a kraft pouch have a window?

Yes, die-cut to your artwork rather than dropped into a stock rectangle. A window on brown paper is worth the money — it gives the eye somewhere to rest.

Is kraft heavier, and does that cost freight?

Slightly heavier than an equivalent film pack, but the difference is small against the weight of what goes in it. It has never been the deciding factor on a job we have quoted.

Can a kraft pouch be fully compostable?

Yes, with a compostable liner instead of PE — see compostable packaging. Kraft over PE is not compostable, whatever the pack looks like.

Does kraft take a zipper, a valve and a tin tie?

All three. The closures mount to the laminate rather than to the paper, so the options are the same as on a film pouch.
