Stand Up Pouches

Custom stand up pouches, also sold as doypacks, have a base gusset that opens under the fill weight so the pack stands and faces forward on a shelf. We print them from 100 g to 1 kg in PET/PE, foil, kraft and recycled-content laminates, with resealable zippers, die-cut windows, matt or gloss finishes and tear notches specified at the die stage. Gusset depth is set from the fill weight and the bulk density together, because the same weight of an aerated snack and a dense powder need different bases.

How a stand up pouch is built

A Gusset That Opens Under the Weight of the Fill

A stand up pouch is two webs of film sealed on three sides with a folded panel welded into the base. As the pack fills, that panel opens into an oval footprint and the pouch stands. Everything that makes the shape work or fail is in that base: how deep the gusset is, how heavy the fill is, and whether the two are matched.

Gusset Depth Is the Whole Specification

Too shallow and the pack will not take the volume. Too deep and it goes squat and loses the shelf presence that made you choose it. We work the depth back from your fill weight and bulk density, because 500 g of aerated snack and 500 g of dense powder need different bases.

Where the Shape Runs Out

  • Below about 50 g there is not enough mass to open the base, and the pack leans. A three side seal pouch is the honest answer.
  • Above about 5 kg the gusset stops carrying cleanly. A flat bottom bag takes over.
  • Two thirds empty, a stand up pouch leans forward. If facing matters through the whole life of the pack, flat bottom again.
  • For a liquid, the same body with a fitment welded in is a spout pouch.

What Gets Added to It

Zippers where the pack is opened more than twice, tear notches so the first opening is clean, degassing valves for coffee, hang holes for peg display, die-cut windows over the product, and round or shaped corners. Each is a decision that costs film or headspace, so we ask what the pack has to do rather than adding them by default.

The shape runs in every material we make: foil, kraft paper, compostable, recycled content and standard PET/PE.

What actually holds a stand up pouch upright?

A folded panel welded into the base that opens into an oval footprint under the weight of the fill. Nothing else in the construction contributes; if the base is wrong the pack leans however good the film is.

How deep should the base gusset be?

Deep enough for the volume without making the pack squat. We work it back from fill weight and bulk density, so a light aerated snack and a dense powder of the same weight get different bases.

What is the smallest fill that will still stand?

Around 50 g. Below that there is not enough mass to open the gusset and the pouch leans, which is why sample sizes are usually three side seal instead.

What is the largest stand up pouch you make?

About 5 kg before the gusset stops carrying cleanly. Past that a flat bottom bag or a heavy duty sack is the better construction.

Why does my pouch lean when it is half empty?

Because the fill was holding the gusset open. It is normal for the shape. If facing has to hold through the whole life of the pack, a flat bottom bag keeps its footprint instead.

Zipper or no zipper?

Zipper if the pack is opened more than twice before it is empty. It costs film and headspace, so on a single-portion fill it is money spent on nothing.

Can the pouch have a window in any shape?

Yes, die-cut to your artwork rather than dropped into a stock rectangle. Keep it clear of the seal lands and away from sharp internal corners, which start tears.

Will it run on my rotary pouch filler?

Tell us the machine make and we match the width, gusset and top seal to it. Pre-made pouch fillers are fussy about registration, so this is agreed before the die is cut.

What film thickness is normal?

Between 100 and 160 microns for most retail fills. Heavier survives the pallet and the last mile; lighter saves material. Fill weight and freight route decide it.

Can a stand up pouch be made to hang as well as stand?

Yes, with a reinforced hang hole in the top seal. Say so early: the hole needs seal land around it, which changes the top seal depth.
