Baby food is the most heavily scrutinised thing we pack, and rightly so. The pack has to be shelf stable without preservatives, safe in a child’s hands, and compliant with rules that differ by market. None of that is exotic engineering, but every part of it has to be specified deliberately rather than inherited from a similar job.
Retort Is the Starting Point
Shelf-stable baby food is retorted: filled, sealed, then heat treated in the pack. That means the laminate and the fitment have to be rated for the temperature and dwell of your retort cycle. A standard spout distorts and a standard laminate delaminates; there is no version of this that can be adapted afterwards.
The Cap Is a Safety Part
Spout caps for this category are specified against choking-hazard rules, which vary by market. Larger-diameter caps, tethered caps and child-resistant designs all exist and all cost differently. Does the pouch have to be retort capable?
For an ambient shelf-stable product, yes. The pack is filled, sealed and then heat treated, so both the laminate and the fitment have to be rated for your retort cycle.
What cap should I use?
One sized against the choking-hazard rules of the market you sell into, which differ. Tell us the market before we quote, because it changes the tooling rather than the artwork.
What fitment diameter for a puree?
Around 10 mm for most purees. Thicker textures need wider, or a toddler cannot get the food out, which turns into a product complaint rather than a packaging one.
Do you supply tamper evidence?
Yes, and for this category it is not optional in practice. It has to be visible to a parent before the first squeeze, on a pack that may have been stored for months.
What testing comes with the pack?
Migration testing on the finished structure rather than on the film alone, plus seal integrity. Certificates are supplied against the batch.
Can baby food pouches be compostable?
Not with a retort process, which the compostable laminates we run will not survive. For chilled or frozen baby food it becomes possible; we would test it against your process first.
How much space do I need for the nutrition panel?
More than most first drafts allow. Allergen and nutrition text is at legal sizes, so we plan the flat panel at the dieline stage rather than shrinking type later.
Will the pouch stand on a shelf?
Yes, on a base gusset. At 100 ml it is close to the lower limit for standing well, which is one reason that size is often merchandised in a tray.
Can it be frozen instead of retorted?
Yes, with a freezer-grade sealant and a fitment specified for cold. It is a different structure from the retort version, not the same pack used differently.
