Custom Printed Compostable Mylar Bag for Odour and Moisture Sensitive Dry Goods No. 2Herbs and Botanicals Packaging
Smell-proof packaging for dried herbs, botanicals and supplements, where the aroma inside the pack is the reason the product is worth buying and the pack has to hold it in rather than only keep moisture out. We build it from 1 g singles to 250 g retail in foil and metallised laminates with heavy press-to-close zippers. The packs ship heat-sealed with a tear notch above the zipper, so the zipper only ever reseals one that has already been opened.

About herb and botanical packaging
The Pack Has to Hold the Smell in, Not Just the Moisture Out
Most food packs are specified to keep things from getting in. A botanical pack is specified the other way round as well: the aroma inside is volatile, it is the reason the product is worth buying, and if it escapes through the film or past the zipper the customer receives something duller than what was packed. Everything below follows from that.
Why These Run in Foil Rather than Clear Film
Aroma compounds are small molecules and they pass through polyethylene given time. A metallised or foil layer is what stops them, which is why almost everything in this range is a foil laminate rather than a clear or matt PE pouch. The same layer blocks light, and light is what fades dried leaf and flower fastest. A buyer who asks for a window is asking for the two things the structure exists to prevent, so a window here is kept small and deliberate.
What Is Actually Packed in These
- Dried herbs and loose botanicals — light, bulky and fragile. Volume sets the gusset, not weight; a 50 g pack is physically large.
- Supplements and capsules — small fills where the pack is mostly headspace, so the seal integrity matters more than the film gauge.
- Odour-sensitive dry goods — anything stored beside something else in a warehouse and expected not to take on its smell.
- Sample and single-dose formats — 1 g to 7 g flat pouches, printed the same as the retail size so a range reads as one range.
The Zipper Is the Weak Point, Not the Film
A foil laminate does its job continuously. A zipper only does its job when it is closed properly, and it is the part the customer operates every day. On this range we specify a heavier press-to-close profile than a snack pack would use, and where the fill genuinely must not leak aroma we add a tear notch above the zipper so the pack ships sealed and the zipper is only ever a reclosure, never the primary seal.
Sizes, and Why the Small Ones Dominate
Botanical products sell in small weights at high value, which is unusual in flexible packaging and changes the economics. A 1,000-piece run of 5 g pouches is a normal first order here where it would be a sample run in pet food. It also means print quality carries more of the sale: the pack is small, it is handled closely, and a soft edge on a logo is visible in a way it is not on a 5 kg sack. These run on the same metallised PET structures as our dry-goods range, in three side seal and stand up formats.
Frequently asked
Specifying Herbs and Botanicals Packaging: The Questions That Decide It
What makes a pouch smell-proof?
A foil or metallised barrier layer, a continuous seal on three sides and a zipper heavy enough to close fully. Aroma escapes through thin polyethylene given time, so a clear PE pouch cannot do this job however well it is sealed.
Can I have a window on a smell-proof bag?
A small one, and it is a trade-off we will spell out. The window is the lowest-barrier part of the pack, so we keep it away from the fill line and size it to show the product rather than to fill the panel.
What sizes do these come in?
From 1 g flat pouches up to 500 g stand up pouches. Small formats dominate this category, and we run them at the same 1,000-piece minimum as the larger sizes.
Is the zipper the primary seal?
No. We ship the pack heat-sealed with a tear notch above the zipper, so the zipper only ever reseals a pack that has already been opened. That is what keeps the first-open aroma intact.
Do you print child-resistant closures?
We supply child-resistant zipper profiles where a market requires them. Tell us the market and we specify to its standard; we fit the closure rather than advise on the regulation.
Will the foil interfere with a metal detector?
Yes, foil laminates are opaque to metal detection. Lines that inspect after filling use metallised PET instead, which keeps most of the barrier and passes detection. Say at quoting which you need.
How long does the aroma hold?
It depends on the fill and the storage, so we do not publish a figure. What we can tell you is the oxygen and moisture transmission rate of the structure quoted, which is the part under our control.
Can these be made recyclable?
A mono-material PE version with a high-barrier coating is available and is store-drop-off recyclable in several markets. It gives up some aroma retention against foil, so we sample both before you commit.
Do you do matt finishes?
Yes, and most of this range is specified matt. It resists fingerprints on a pack that gets handled closely, and it is the finish this category has settled on.
What is the minimum order?
1,000 pieces per artwork, the same as the rest of the catalogue. Small pack sizes do not carry a higher minimum here.
