Sauce and Condiment Pouches

Sauce and condiment pouches are spouted packs that pour cleanly, stand once opened and empty almost completely. We run them from 50 ml sachets to 5 litre foodservice refills with a carry handle, in PET/PE, foil and certified compostable laminates. Sauces are hot-filled or retorted far more often than other liquids, so the sealant and the fitment are specified against your filling process rather than to a default, and trialled with your actual product.

The numbers are how many packs in this range are also in that one, counted from the catalogue rather than chosen by hand.

About sauce and condiment pouches

Thick, Hot When Filled, and Expected to Pour to the Last

Sauces bring three problems at once: they are viscous, they are often filled hot or retorted, and customers judge the pack on whether the last of it comes out. A ketchup pouch that leaves a third behind is a bad pack no matter how well it is printed.

Viscosity Picks the Fitment

A thin sauce runs through a standard spout. A thick one needs a wide bore or it takes a squeeze hard enough to split the pack. Pastes and chunky sauces sometimes need a fitment wider than anything a drinks buyer would recognise. Send us the product, or its viscosity, rather than the category name.

Hot Fill and Retort

Most shelf-stable sauces are hot filled or retorted, and the laminate and the fitment both have to be rated for it. A pack specified for a cold-filled dressing will distort on a hot line, and the failure shows up as leakers a week later rather than immediately.

Emptying Cleanly

  • A base gusset that opens fully, so sauce is not trapped in a fold
  • A corner spout where the pack is meant to be squeezed rather than poured
  • An inner layer chosen so the sauce releases rather than clings
  • A pack shape a hand can actually grip when it is nearly empty

Oils are a category of their own within this: they attack sealants that are fine with a tomato base, so the inner layer is specified against the fat and the acidity together.

Frequently asked

Specifying Sauce and Condiment Pouches: The Questions That Decide It

What fitment do I need for a thick sauce?

A wide bore. A viscous sauce through a narrow spout takes a squeeze hard enough to stress the pack, and customers read that as a packaging fault.

Can sauce pouches be hot filled?

With a laminate and a fitment rated for it. A cold-fill specification distorts on a hot line, and the failure shows up as leakers a week later rather than at the machine.

Will oil attack the pouch?

It can. Fats and acidity together are harder on a sealant than either alone, so for oils and dressings the inner layer is specified against both.

How do I stop sauce being left in the pack?

A base gusset that opens fully, a spout positioned for how the pack is actually held, and an inner layer the sauce releases from rather than clings to.

Can you do single-portion sachets as well?

Yes, from about 10 ml, as flat three side seal sachets. Those are usually run alongside a retail pouch from the same artwork family.

Is retort available for shelf-stable sauces?

Yes, with a retort-grade structure throughout. It is the standard route for an ambient pasta sauce or curry base.

Should the spout be at the top or the corner?

Corner if the pack is squeezed onto a plate, top-centre if it is poured. It changes the dieline, so it is settled before tooling.

Can the pack be squeezed without splitting?

Yes, with the right film gauge. If you expect hard squeezing on a thick product, say so — we specify for it rather than to a category default.

Do you make catering sizes?

Up to 5 L, usually with a wide fitment and a carry handle. Past that it becomes a handled pouch and is quoted as one.

Can a sauce pouch be frozen?

With a freezer-grade sealant, yes, and it is common for meal-kit components. Both the laminate and the fitment need specifying for cold.
